Weekly Experience
The Coterie Online system for gaining experience points (or XP) is similar to the storytelling style presented in the book, in which the player requests experience based on his opinion of his gaming experience over a set period (in this case, one week). Each player may request from one to three experience points, using the bot command listed below, each week before 12am EST Monday (i.e. Sunday night). Storytellers will review this request, approve or adjust it, and possibly add bonus points at their discretion. The criteria for earning experience are as follows, each category being worth one experience:
- Your character learned something valuable this week.
- You furthered personal storylines by roleplaying with with other players - not just spending time in #gamehelp.
- Your character participated in major storylines, or got closer to or accomplished a personal goal in some way.
The storytellers, having access to all of the logs, will review the requests and if they agree with an assertion on XP, that request will be granted no later than Wednesday at 12:00am EST (Tuesday night). If the staff decides a request is off for some reason, the player will be notified via PM on the forum, and may ask any questions in #gamehelp.

Bonus Experience
The Storytellers will frequently grant bonus experience points, up to a maximum of 5xp (including the player's weekly request) to individuals who go above and beyond, or accomplish great things. A player receiving bonus experience will be notified via PM on the forums. A few things which will gain a character bonus experience points include:
- Excellent Role Playing: A player may have acted against his best interests because it's what his character would have done, or may have played a particular scene very well, or impressed his fellow players and the staff with his writing or characterization.
- Major Accomplishment: Maybe a character dislodged an enemy from a major city position, or accomplished a major personal goal. Perhaps the character overcame insurmountable odds, or made an enormous turn-around from a bad situation.
- Contribution: The character may have become a highly integral part of the game through some means. Being on "a lot" does not qualify; the character must be involved in many storylines, and be highly visible - the kind of character that everyone gets to know, and has a relationship of some kind with everyone, good or bad. (This reward will not be handed out every week to the same players if they are consistently playing a lot, it's an incentive to become involved, not to stagnate and do the same thing each week.)
