Feeding
From CoterieWiki
| Coterie Online Wiki |
They say the only things that are guaranteed in life are death and taxes. Kindred know that neither are a sure bet. For the children of Caine, the only thing that is certain to be is the hunger. The addiction to blood, and the power it grants is all consuming – and every Kindred, even those few with an over developed sense of morality and sympathy for mortals, must feed of the blood of the population they attempt to blend with.
In Coterie Online, we use a dice system for feeding, similar to the one detailed in the third edition Vampire: the Masquerade core book.
As detailed on the bot commands page, you can check your blood pool at any time by typing !getbp in the presence of the bot. Myrmidon should be connected in every channel, and will display your current blood pool total. Once you decide that you need to fill your pool up, you’ll want to use the !hunt command to begin the process.
The command should look like this:
!hunt (hours) (difficulty) (area) (modifiers)
You may hunt for up to three hours in one night, never more. If you choose to hunt for less, you may attempt another hunt roll, but only for a combined total of three hours added to your last hunt. For instance, if you hunt for 2 hours, you may hunt again, but only for one hour.
The second field listed is the difficulty you are hunting at. It should be noted that it is possible to fail a hunt roll, which will result in your character receiving no blood points, which will result in you being required to feed again another night. If you botch a feed roll, the bot will notify you that you must wait to feed again until you have notified a storyteller of your botch. A storyteller will typically run a scene, or explain to you the consequences of a botch when it occurs – remember to report all feeding botches ASAP. Unreported botches are considered cheating, and we have logs of bot activity, including feed rolls.
Because of the nature of the roll – you are more likely to fail or botch if you feed for less hours. If your difficulty is high, you should consider always hunting for three hours to increase the likelihood that you will succeed. If you roll your hunt before you go in character for the day, you do not have to wait to play. The same can be accomplished by hunting after you’re done playing for the night. However; if you decide you want to feed in the middle of role-playing, you must leave your current scene, hunt, and wait the appropriate amount of time before going back in character (1, 2, or 3 hours.)
All hunt rolls should be made in general purpose channels.
The areas your character can choose to feed are any District found on the Locations page (Historic District, Eastern Bloc, Downtown, The Docks, Center City Park). On each location page the feeding difficulty is listed.
If your character has a feed preference, he or she must feed in an area which is conducive to the targets he or she is seeking. In other words, a Ventrue or another Kindred of discriminating tastes may not feed in the poor areas of town unless their preferences lead them there. If your character is the type to eschew loud club scenes and smokey bars, a timid and nerdy Tremere, a skittish Malkavian or a grizzled old Gangrel – you should take their personality into account when deciding where to feed. Not only does this promote better role-playing, but if you botch in an area which is unsuitable for your character, the consequences may be much more dire than they might have been otherwise.
You don’t feed at just the area’s difficulty, however. You modify your difficulty based on a number of parameters based on stats, merits, flaws and clan. If any of the following appear on your sheet, please modify your difficulty accordingly.

With all of that calculated, your feed roll should look something like this:
!hunt 3 5 (Downtown 5) (+1 Touch of Frost, +3 Ventrue Clan Flaw, -1 Presence, -2 Dominate, -1 Herd 1)
This way you can see for yourself the way the math works out, and the Storyteller staff can see exactly what you’re doing for feeding, so that they can accurately assess feeding botches, and carry out story-lines involving feeding.
Please note that if your calculated feed difficulty can never go higher than 10 or lower than 2. Lower or higher difficulties default to the maximum or minimum values respectively.
